Paul was killed during the 1991 Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting. He'd won every round of the series and was leading the race when his car crashed at Knickerbrook. He passed away due to his injuries. He won the race - his 5th race of the series - and subsequently won the championship posthumously, such was his lead in the championship.
If ever there was a racing driver that was going places, it was Paul. He was going to be the Next Big Thing. He was going to be Special. Fate played its final hand in the cruel twist that took him - a talented and kind man who will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him. I knew him through marshalling. The accident that nearly killed me had been the previous year - the European F3000 series at Donington - and to this day I wish it had been me that was taken, rather than Paul. He was so special. Sleep peacefully Paul, look after my loved ones, until we meet again. xx
